Consumption Patterns of Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems in Kenya

This Policy brief examines consumption patterns of electronic nicotine and non-nicotine delivery systems (ENDS/ENNDS) in Kenya using data from the 2022 Kenya Consumer Insights Survey. A total of 2,837 respondents participated, covering diverse geographic groups, including resource-rich and less-resourced regions. Data were collected through structured questionnaires assessing awareness, use, frequency of consumption, and quitting behaviour related to ENDS/ENNDS. The findings indicate differences in consumption across socioeconomic and demographic groups, with variations associated with education, age, sex, and household socioeconomic characteristics. Users in resource-rich and less-resourced regions reported consuming ENDS/ENNDS within the previous 12 months, while a proportion reported continued use and limited attempts to quit. The study also identified differences in consumption patterns between regions and socioeconomic groups. These findings highlight the relevance of ENDS/ENNDS use in Kenya and the need for strengthened surveillance and regulation. Targeted prevention, public awareness, and cessation interventions are important to address nicotine consumption patterns.
